Description (Service) Arts council supports and promotes excellence in artistic, culture, and intellectual pursuits throughout Durham Region * operates youth-in-arts programs, juried competitions, art and photography exhibitions, lecture series, concerts, and scholarships * publishes a directory of the region's performing and visual arts groups, museums, and libraries * produces events which combine visual and performing arts in unique ways * advocates for creation of a professional-caliber, publicly-owned, not-for-profit Regional Center for the Performing and Visual Arts to serve Durham Region * referral service for the arts and culture sector * refer newcomers to the region to visual and performing artists, amateur theater groups, artists' associations or educational programs with which they seek to become involved 
Artsforum Magazine 
Collaboration and partnership with the Durham Council for the Arts * magazine of arts and ideas * covers books, film, art, music, live theater, dance, photography, fiction, poetry, memoirs, and travel * analysis of public policy issues involving such subjects as foreign policy, law reform, and human rights * comprehensive calendar of events that promotes artistic, cultural, and heritage events throughout Durham Region and beyond 
Acorn Awards  
Conferred upon individuals and groups who make substantial contributions to the region's intellectual, cultural, or artistic life 
Year-round film and discussion series which screens the best festival films from around the world every week on Thursday evenings, in acclaimed collaboration in continuing community education between University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), Durham College, the Durham Council for the Arts, and Artsforum * each screening is followed by attendant seminar, in the form of informal discussion about the film
